History of Tenpin Bowling in the UK Part 80 – Excel Bowl Grant Street Cleethorpes Lincolnshire

By Tenpin Bowling Proprietors Association President John Ashbridge

The fourteenth centre in the Excel estate to open was the 32-lane bowl in Grant Street, Cleethorpes which opened on September 29th 1964. As, what was usual for Excel Bowling, the lanes and bowling equipment was supplied by AMF Bowling. The centre was set in a new building on the site of the old Theatre Royal. Very little more is known about the bowling centre and it was closed on 16th June 1970. It is believed that the site remained for some time but was reopened in 1975 as Bunny’s Nightclub and Clifton Bingo Hall. Later it became Shakers, then Peppers Nightclub and in 1982 was destroyed by a mysterious fire.
