History of Tenpin Bowling in the UK Part 106 – Universal Bowl Seacroft Lane Seacroft Leeds 14 Yorkshire

By John Ashbridge, Tenpin Bowling Proprietors Association President

The next centre to open in 1965 was another in the Universal operation, this time the 24-lane AMF equipped centre, which opened in Seacroft on the outskirts of Leeds, on 27th May 1965 and opened by The Queen as part of the £1.25 million Civic Centre development. It is another bowling centre where any information is difficult to find but it must have been unsuccessful from the start as, in June 1966 twelve lanes were removed. It is not known if any other operation was introduced into the vacated area. After this the centre lasted just another twelve months and was closed on 17th May 1967. The Centre was completely demolished in 1999 and redeveloped with a large new Tesco store taking up much of the site.
