Dave Steiner

Year Inducted 2026

Mr Steiner is often referred to Grumpy Major – this is from his rank serving the British Army. And it’s where his bowling journey begun where in 1978 as then a staff sergeant in Canada he set up a three lane manual centre for a UK/Canadian league. Then throughout the 80s as a Warrant Officer, he managed Army bowling and most tournaments in Europe.

During that time he was the Army champion 8yrs times in a row. This was probably one of the reasons why he was promoted to an Officer. Whilst overseeing Army bowling, he was also involving himself in International bowling. Getting involved in local groups in Germany. He negotiated with local bowls to become more sport focus, showing them about lane conditioning, and how setting up local German leagues alongside military ones would improve their business model.

When he left the Army in the mid 90s he consulted with the local council and had a 10 lane bowling alley set up in Farnborough leisure centre, setting up leagues including a YBC, that ran until Covid. During this time he was on the Hampshire committee, being Chairman for a time. Dave has been a coach to several team England players, and many players have benefited from his vast knowledge none more so then his beloved wife Jan.

Dave also has acted as a Team England Manager. Then there is the work he has done for the BTBA – serving on the executive council for many years in the role of head of legal and vice chairman. He was a major part of setting up and managing the very successful Tenpin Tour. The National, and Local level contribution Dave Steiner has made is immeasurable, none more so than shaping the governance of the sport in this country.
